This makes the IIT Admission procedure more rigorous and the competition more stiff as students brace themselves for All India Ranks. Every engineering aspirant who has crossed the hurdle of JEE Mains, one question keeps bothering while preparing for IIT-JEE Advanced that what are the major differences in the syllabus between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced?
It is very important for students to perceive every detail about JEE (Mains & Advanced) as both are integral and distinct at the same time. Where both examinations are the portal for admission into the top Engineering Universities and Colleges of India, there are some major differences between JEE Advanced and JEE Mains in term of their Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Preparation status, etc. This post throws some light on ‘How to prepare for JEE Advanced considering the difference in Syllabus from Mains?’. Here’s a list of the topics that are not a part of the JEE Main but are included in JEE Advanced.
Topics included in JEE Advanced and not in JEE Mains
Aspirants need to pay special attention to the following topics and must cover them to complete their JEE Advanced preparation:
Thermal Physics – Newton’s Law of Cooling, Absorptive and Emissive powers, Black body Radiation, Kirchoff’s Law, Wien’s Displacement Law, Stefan’s Law.
Electro Chemistry – Equivalent Conductivity.
Nucleus Chemistry – Properties of Alpha, Beta and Gamma Rays, Kinetics of Radioactive Decay, Radioactive, Carbon Dating, Fission and Fusion reactions, Stability of Nuclei with respect to Proton-Neutron Ratio.
Mathematics – Everything from JEE Advanced syllabus is also in JEE Main syllabus.
Topics not included in JEE Advanced and in JEE Mains
Aspirants must have studied the following topics during JEE Mains preparation but the following topics are strictly not covered in the Advanced syllabus, hence don’t revise them for JEE Advanced preparation:
Electronic Device – Diodes as a rectifier, I-V characteristics in forward and reverse bias, I-V characteristics of LED, solar cell and diode, photodiode, Zener diode as a voltage regulator. Junction transistor, transistor as an amplifier (common emitter configuration) and Oscillator, Logic gates (OR, AND, NOT, NAND and NOR). Transistor as a switch, transistor action and characteristics of a transistor.
Electromagnetic waves – Characteristics of Electromagnetic Waves, Transverse nature of electromagnetic waves, Applications of Electromagnetic waves and Electromagnetic spectrum.
Communication System – Electromagnetic waves’ propagation, Bandwidth of signals & transmission medium, Basic elements of a Communication System (Block Diagram only), Amplitude and Frequency Modulation.
Biomolecules – Chemical constitution of DNA and RNA (Nucleic acids), Classification and functions (Vitamins).
Everyday Life Chemistry – Analgesics, tranquilizers, antiseptics, disinfectants, antimicrobials, antifertility drugs, antibiotics, antacids (Chemicals in medicines), antihistamines meaning and general illustrations.
- Chemicals in food – Preservatives and artificial sweetening agents.
- Cleansing agents – Cleansing action and soaps and detergents.
Sets, Relations and Functions – Sets and their representation, Union, Equivalence relation, Powerset, relation, Types of relations and intersection and complement of sets and their Algebraic Properties.
Statistics and Probability – Measures of Dispersion, calculation of mean, Median. Mode of grouped and ungrouped data calculation of standard deviation, ungrouped data, variance and mean deviation for grouped.
Trigonometry – Heights and Distances.
Mathematics Reasoning – Understanding of tautology, Statements, logical operations and, or, implies, implied by, if and only if, Contradiction, Converse and Contrapositive.
Here are some general differences student must keep in his mind while attempting JEE Advanced 2018!
- The students who qualify in JEE Mains, the admissions are provided into National Institute of Technology (NITs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) while in JEE Advanced qualified students gets admission into IITs.
- In JEE Mains exam, the choice is provided to attempt either Paper 1 or 2 while submitting Application Form and in JEE Advanced exam both papers are mandatory.
- In JEE Mains, Paper 1 has questions of Physics, Chemistry, Math and Paper 2 covers questions of Designing, Mathematics and Aptitude while in JEE Advanced both the papers include questions of Physics, Chemistry, Math.
- The pattern of both the papers of JEE Mains are fixed and organized by CBSE and in JEE Advanced there is no fix pattern as every year exam is organized by different IITs.
- JEE Mains is easier compared to JEE Advanced.
- JEE Mains can be attempted for 3 consecutive times by the students while JEE Advanced allows only 2 chances to appear for the exam.
- JEE Mains is conducted in online mode as well as offline mode while JEE Advanced is strictly in online mode.
The selection of the Aspirants is determined on the basis of the All India Rank (AIR) secured in the JEE Advanced exam. Students must keep positive attitude towards the preparation for the examination. The result of hard work during JEE preparation will positively reflect in JEE Advanced.
